Did you know that around 15-20% of people in the UK are neurodivergent? That means their brains learn, think and behave differently from what is considered “typical”. Neurodiversity Week celebrates these differences and helps us see the unique strengths and challenges of neurodivergent individuals.

If you are neurodivergent and thinking of freelancing, there’s government help available. Access to Work (AtW) can support your needs in the workplace, which is beyond the employers reasonable adjustments. You might also be eligible for the ‘new style’ Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) if you have a health condition that affects how much you can work.

Employers can also support you by offering remote working and flexible hours. They can also provide modified workspaces with noise-cancelling headsets or alternative lighting. If you need further advice or support, check out Disability Arts Online. It offers guidance with the criteria for self-employed, employees and employers.

Are you looking for a creative role? Check out UAL’s jobs board, Creative Opportunities. It is run by Careers and Employability which is the go-to hub for creative graduates. If you studied art, design, communications, performance – this is the spot for you! You can find jobs, paid internships, competitions and volunteering roles and more. Our goal is to help you achieve your ambitions and make a living doing what you love.

Being neurodivergent may present certain obstacles, but it also gives you extraordinary abilities that can help you succeed in your career. So, let’s celebrate Neurodiversity Week together and embrace our differences!
