Description
Fluency in English is a poor metric for measuring one’s integration into the local community. AFGC was founded on the belief that First Generation Asians are often overlooked when it comes to integration, while it is not in one’s culture to actively speak out even when help is needed.
We are a new Charity aiming to empower the Asian community in the UK, especially those whose families did not grow up locally. We provide 3 main opportunities for our beneficiaries, which would otherwise be available to our local counterparts:
- Knowledge Sharing and Support (think FAQ on visa, tax or renting)
- Social events and bonding (think get-togethers during ethnic holidays)
- Career advice and networking (think tips on interviews, workplace culture)
The Community has grown organically and successfully since its launch 12 months ago, we currently have a team of 10, comprising Trustees, Project Managers and Volunteers. We are now looking for a passionate and motivated team to push our reach further.
Responsibilities
You will be contributing through all or some of these workstreams, depending on your availability
- Marketing and Branding
First impression is key. Working with a finite audience confined by demographics and geography, a failed conversion is a customer lost. You will work with our Knowledge and Community teams, leading and managing our branding strategy. You will decide if and how AFGC should pivot from its current standing as an organic community, and ensure our various digital channels reflect such messaging.
- Community Outreach
There are a number of existing communities we can mutually support. You will expand our reach beyond organic and word-of-mouth growth by reaching out to existing university societies, sports clubs, and communities. By understanding what drives successful conversations, you will adjust the Marketing and Branding Strategy, subsequently introducing an inflow of new members to our vibrant Community.
- External Partnerships
Unlike most existing ethnic-based charities, AFGC does not confine its scope to a particular nationality. As a result, we take extra care to avoid the conflict of political interest, intentionally avoiding national sponsors. From small businesses run by Asian Communities to large corporations that want to give back to society, you will orchestrate a partnership that benefits all parties. You will decide a funding strategy that helps support AFGC’s vision, without compromising our key values.
- Events Development
Events are the key channel of engagement with the public. Currently, our events serve the purpose of allowing members to catch up. To further materialise our vision, you will be in charge of planning and executing new event types, from themed workshops with external guest speakers to large fundraising events. You will work with the Events team and Trustees to ensure such events add value to our members and any partnering parties.
Qualifications
While similar roles typically look for experience in fundraising, project management and stakeholder relationships, we prioritise who you are as a person:
- You resonate with our vision.
- You uphold your commitments.
- You are trustworthy and do not take shortcuts.
- You do not shy away from difficult conversations.
What do you get
Our board of trustees and professional network members all come from highly productive and ambitious backgrounds in Finance, Consulting and Startups. You will have direct access to our mentorship, personalised development plan, and industry insights.
You will take the steering wheel. While advised by the board of Trustees on our vision, you essentially have full liberty to execute our vision in a way you see fit. From team structure to hiring, and even how you want to shape your role with us*, you will be the one leading these decisions.
We are 100% self-funded and do not charge our participants more than a fair split, our team commit on a volunteer basis. As you join us to help bring AFGC into the dynamic Charity market, we look forward to an exciting and healthy flow of resources. Head of Partnerships will be given priority when distributing compensation.
Note: As this is a volunteering role, no visa sponsorship is required, meaning anyone on any type of visa status can apply for this role.
*This role could be flexible to suit your needs, both in terms of hours and responsibilities. You will tell us what human resources are required to execute our vision! As such, we welcome candidates of all sort of backgrounds.
