Description

Whether you’re an experienced filmmaker or an enthusiastic beginner who’s never picked up a camera, this is your chance to dive into the exciting world of video production for public benefit. The charity WORLDwrite is offering a hands-on volunteer opportunity to train with professional equipment at its centre in Hackney and then film the Battle of Ideas Festival, held in the heart of Westminster, London.

This dynamic opportunity combines training, teamwork, and the thrill of capturing a fast-paced, intellectually stimulating festival on film. Over an action-packed weekend, you’ll help produce high-quality video content from more than 100 challenging debates and discussions on everything from politics, economics, and education to science, technology, and the arts. The festival is renowned for its motto, “free speech allowed”, and its dedication to thought-provoking, public conversations. Since its inception in 2005, WORLDwrite has proudly served as media partner for this prestigious event, and we want you to be part of our 2025 crew.

As a Festival TV Maker, you’ll be trained in every aspect of live debate filming. Your efforts will contribute to the production of over 50 high-quality debate videos—shared online for a global audience. And yes, every volunteer receives a credit, a powerful asset for any aspiring media professional. You’ll also receive a full festival pass plus refreshments, lunches and local travel expenses will be covered.

Main Duties

After camera training and practice sessions at the WORLDwrite centre in Hackney volunteers will join crews to film debates and discussions over the Battle of Ideas festival weekend in Westmnister. Bringing high level debates and lesser known voices to whole new audiences will be an achievement to be proud of. None of the speakers at this amazing festival are paid and we’ll be doing justice to their efforts too. Volunteers will work with professional tutors, the charity’s director, a festival film making crew of up to 50 volunteers and can make the most of attending an event with thousands and considerable networking opportunities.

What will the volunteering role offer the student and what will they learn while they are with you?

  • Professional training – learn new fim making skills you can put on your CV
  • Live event filming
  • Experience of working with a crew in a fast paced environment
  • A fun, friendly & passionate crew to work with and make new friends with
  • You will feature in the end credits of all videos produced
  • A full free festival pass for the Battle of Ideas festival 2025 which thousands attend
  • A major networking opportunity with thousands of festival attendees
