Self-employed Archive Assistant – part time and temporary

Salary FTE £30K - dependent on experience.

It is expected that the project will take 3-6 months. Part time hours/ days to be agreed but equivalent to approximately 3 days a week

Main Duties
- Initial assessment of the complete archive and contents
- Following overview, develop a comprehensive database for the record-keeping for all sculptures, models and designs.
- Create individual records for all works.
- Alongside database develop comprehensive hard copy records and filing system
- Digitisation of the archive – arrange for photography of works where required, ensuring all items are accurately recorded
- Assess holdings for any repairs or conservation required
- Oversee storage of works, including:
- Working to develop and implement a suitable storage plan ensuring safety of works and optimum utilisation of space
- Using appropriate storage materials for long term preservation
- Properly labelling and maintaining accurate inventory of works
- Condition checking works and crates
Skills and Experience Required
This post requires a focused, hard-working person, with a keen eye for detail to work closely with the family to ensure we have a full and accurate record that can be accessed by museums / galleries.
Experience
- Previous experience of arts administration in an artist’s studio, gallery, museum or private collection
- Ideally some experience of collection management and record keeping
- High computer literacy with extensive experience across all Microsoft Office programmes
- Experience working with a large database system preferred but not essential

- Highly organised and adept at establishing and rigorously maintaining systems
- Pragmatic approach to practical and logistical elements of job
- Clear communicator who can effectively liaise with people across different levels and cultures
- Ability to work quickly while maintaining meticulous attention to detail
- Ability to prioritise workload and balance competing demands on your time
- Sensitive and self-motivated
- A lively ‘can-do’ attitude with an ability to solve problems on the go
- A keen interest in contemporary art and design
