Full-Time Entry-Level Designer / Cartographer Position 2026

Salary £27,000 per annum
Hours 9am - 5.30pm Monday - Friday
Location Stoke Newington, London, N16
Closing Date 11 January 2026
Position Type Full Time
Advert expires on 11 January 2026

Main Duties

Our little team of cartographers needs to grow from 3 to 4 in the new year!

We are an art studio specialising in designing and making handcrafted terrestrial, lunar & celestial globes (or anything else a client may dream up!) – as well as bespoke maps.

We are looking for a full time entry-level designer / cartographer to join our team.

With each globe and map being made bespoke to order, projects start in the Cartography department. Our projects are hugely varied, ranging from globes with simple edits and added pieces of personalisation, to projects that involve heavy research into historic and scientific information. We also make detailed area and world maps.

You will be working primarily digitally, alongside a small team of cartographers in a vibrant and highly creative studio environment. In addition to design responsibilities, the role also involves using and maintaining wide format printers, and the quality control of printed media. There will be training provided – but design experience, an eye for detail and great aesthetic judgment is very important.

Skills and Experience Required

Responsibilities and Daily life:

• Designing and editing globe files to meet bespoke personalisation requests. These requests can range from plotting locations, to researching, designing and implementing scientific and historical information across the globe.
• Producing PDF mock-ups of personalisation requests for customers.
• Producing internal and client facing design assets and sales material.
• Liaising with Customer Relations & Sales Manager, Head of Production, and the Illustration team to manage timelines and resolve projects.
• Implementing updates to continuously improve the quality of our cartographic resources.
• Maintaining the archive of digital design assets.
• Operating wide format printers and resolving print requests to support production.
• Answering the phone and relaying messages to relevant individuals within the company and/or answering queries from prospective customers.

More about the role and what we are looking for:

*** Essential:

• Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator. Experience with InDesign & Photoshop preferred.
• Meticulous attention to detail. Our design files are densely detailed (Upwards of 100k Paths and 7k text elements). The role requires delicate handling of these complex files, and the quality control of the final printed media.
• Strong Communication Skills. The Cartography department requires frequent liaising with other departments, from the globe makers to painters. You will be working within a collaborative team where you must be able to communicate technical information clearly and concisely.
• Visualisation Skills. Though cartographers work in 2D, the map will ultimately be viewed on a 3D surface. You will be expected to learn and navigate the relationship between the 2D design file, and its final presentation on a 3D surface.
• Strong Research Skills. From researching the journeys of historic explorers, to visualising tectonic faultlines, the role frequently requires the ability to independently research historical & geographical data.
• Highly organised and methodical in workflow management. Must be able to manage self led projects, and effectively meet deadlines and production schedules.
• Typography/Layout Skills. A knowledge of core design principles, ability to problem solve, and an innovative approach to composition for spherical surfaces.
• Independent & Collaborative Worker. You should be comfortable working independently, as well as part of a team.

Preferred:

• Interest in / Working knowledge of Global Geography.
• Interest / Knowledge of GIS software
• Working knowledge of Information Technology and file handling.
• Good troubleshooting skills

We hope anyone applying has a genuine interest in maps/cartography and awareness of physical and political geography. Your design work will need to align with the company’s graphic language.
