Main Duties
Our small company has been organically growing since it was founded in 2008, making bespoke, hand-crafted globes for a global market. Combining traditional techniques with high quality modern materials, we create unique works of art which will be held onto for a lifetime. As such, our small team of craftspeople are trained in-house and held to high standards in the specific skills of globe-making, globe-painting, digital cartography and base/table construction, depending on their role.
We are looking for a watercolour artist to join our team of globe painters at the start of the new year.
Each and every globe we make is bespoke to order and one of a kind in some way. However it is important that every artist in the team abides to the aesthetic directive of the company and maintains consistency of colour and style. There will be role specific training to the level required – but aesthetic judgement is very important and we are looking for someone who has a good eye and hand for detailed work.
Skills and Experience Required
More about the role and what we are looking for:
– Technical experience in watercolours
– Colour theory knowledge, and good at colour matching
– Good prioritising, organisation and communication skills are a must.
– Meticulous attention to detail
– A patient person who is not put off by repetitive work
– Ability to concentrate in a sometimes loud workshop whilst working on intricate work under time pressure and occasionally to tight deadlines
– You should be comfortable working alone as well as a part of a team. Accountability is a must as you’ll be working with other people on the same globe.
– Good communication with team members when technical support is needed, as well as workload and deadlines.
Daily life will usually include:
– Painting sets of gores using layers of pre mixed washes of paint.
– Painting around detailed coastlines and illustrations on the globe.
– Washing jars of paint and cleaning storage units within the painting department.
– Keeping the production system up to date as you progress through your tasks.
– Communication with cartographers, globe-makers and team leaders in order to keep production moving on schedule.
– General studio upkeep shared by all members of the team.
