Job hunting can be daunting, and landing a job unrelated to your course might feel disappointing. But don’t worry – it can be a positive stepping stone! That first job might give you skills you never knew you needed, bringing you closer to your dream career. We interviewed UAL graduates to inspire you! Meet Amelia Stephenson, founder of StudioUnderneath and a BA Contour graduate from London College of Fashion.

What do you currently do employment-wise?

I currently own and run a design agency, where I help small businesses develop successful, sustainable collections. I also freelance part-time for brands like COS and Lemonade Dolls, taking on various roles including designer, product developer, and garment technician.

What was your first job?

My first job after graduation was as a studio assistant at the tailoring brand Sir Tom Baker. Initially, I worked on the shop floor on Saturdays, but after graduation, I was asked to support the studio and assist with fittings. Although my plan was to stay in the underwear/swimwear sector, I enjoyed the role and learned a lot.

Are any of the skills you gained from your first job still useful?

Absolutely. Working at Sir Tom Baker, a small, independently run business, taught me about the commitments of running your own business—like handling finances, taxes, marketing, and social media. I also learned to multitask and support various aspects of the business. Importantly, it improved my customer service and client management skills, which are crucial for running my own B2B business.

What advice would you give to creatives who are currently working a non-creative job to make a living?

While working in tailoring, I realized I wanted to return to the underwear/swimwear sector but struggled because most of my experience was in tailoring. To broaden my portfolio, I started freelancing alongside my full-time job, which helped me hone my skills and manage my time better. This persistence eventually led to a Senior Product Developer role in an underwear brand. My advice to new graduates is to seize every opportunity. Join networking groups and reach out to companies you’re passionate about. Even if they don’t have openings immediately, you’ll be on their radar when something comes up.
