Main Duties

Purpose

  • Regularly supporting teachers and students individually and in groups to learn new techniques, across KS3, GCSE and A level.
  • General assistance to members of staff in the department across 5 subjects (Fine Art, 3D Design, Photography, Textiles & Graphics). This includes preparation of materials and equipment.
  • Supporting the operation, maintenance and upkeep of the specialist equipment
  • Ensuring workshops and other key areas are maintained and are compliant with relevant health and safety regulations.
  • Supporting the promotion of the Art and Design department through the display and storage of student’s work.

Supporting the delivery of Art & Design Courses at KS3, 4 and A-Level:

  • Provide individual and group support for students in all key stages to develop their skills at using a range of tools and equipment including workshop tools.
  • Provide technical support for students in lessons and during the exam period as required by the class teacher including the use of workshop tools, photographic equipment and screen printing.
  • Advise teaching colleagues on the safe and effective use of a range of equipment in the different settings.
  • Take a lead role in ensuring all activities in the workshop and other potentially hazardous settings are safe and risk has been reduced.
  • Prepare resources ordered by teachers to support the delivery of the curriculum, delivering these resources to lessons in a timely manner, including the use of hand tools, raw materials.
  • Respond to student and staff requests for technical support seeking to resolve technical issues as they arise.
  • Be responsible for the safe storage of work, including emptying the drying racks .
  • Organise the distribution of purchased items from Parent Pay, such as sketchbooks and lino.

 Maintenance and Repair:

  • Check stock levels and ordering, ensuring that classroom supplies are restocked as necessary and that equipment/ resources are available for lessons across all material areas within the assigned budgets per team.
  • Maintain and repair workshop tools and equipment to required standards
  • Workshop servicing including assisting in the maintenance of materials, stock, machinery and equipment required for demonstration and for practical work in all

  • Assist with the maintenance and safe storing of equipment (for example sewing machines)

 Promoting Art and Design:

  • Prepare, mount and display work around the department and school to showcase examples of student work.
  • Assist with curating the Art Gallery space.
  • Responsible for setting, hanging, maintaining and replacing the art gallery space
  • Support with Open Evenings and Art events where possible.

Other

  • Organise storage and collection of GCSE and A level

In addition to the permanent Art & Design Technician role, we are offering an opportunity for a suitable candidate to undertake enhanced responsibilities on a temporary basis, covering maternity leave from the start date with an expected end date of the end of July 2027. These additional duties include:

Accountabilities

  1. Newsletter Coordination and Production
  • Coordinate and produce the end of half-term/term whole-school newsletter, including:
    • Scheduling reminders via Insight
    • Liaising with staff to gather content
    • Editing and distributing the final publication
  • Produce curriculum newsletters (7 per cycle, one per year group) using curriculum overviews from the website
  • Compile and distribute the careers newsletter in collaboration with the Careers Advisor
  • Produce pastoral newsletters on an ad hoc basis as directed by the Deputy Headteacher
  1. Student Podcast
  • Coordinate the half-termly student podcast, including:
  • Organising student participants
  • Preparing interview questions
  • Recording and editing content
  • Publishing the final podcast
  1. Marketing and Promotional Materials
  • Design and produce posters and promotional materials for school events, activities and social media content
  • Produce promotional materials for school productions (e.g. posters and programmes)
  • Update PR and communications content as required
  1. Open Evening and Publications
  • Coordinate and update the school prospectus for Open Evening, including:
  • Liaising with SLT for content approval
  • Editing and preparing materials for print
  • Coordinating with external printers (Blue Moose)
  • Support Open Evening preparation by:
  • Creating and printing promotional materials
  • Finalising the Headteacher’s presentation (including branding and imagery)
  • Updating the “Welcome to School” document
  1. Sixth Form Open Evening
  • Update and produce Sixth Form prospectus/booklet in collaboration with Heads of Subject
  • Liaising with SLT for content approval
  • Editing and preparing materials for print
  • Coordinating with external printers (Blue Moose)
  • Create and update the locations leaflet
  • Ensure subject presentations are current on the website

 Additional Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with teaching and support staff to ensure timely and high-quality communications
  • Manage deadlines effectively, particularly around key school events
  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the role as directed by the line manager

 

Skills and Experience Required

  • Good general standard of education i.e. 5+ A-C GCSEs or equivalent
  • Experience of administrative, marketing, or communications work
  • Experience of producing written or digital content (e.g. newsletters, promotional materials)
  • Experience of graphic design or use of design tools (e.g. Adobe)
  • Experience of audio editing or media production
  • Excellent written communication skills with strong attention to detail
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines
  • Competence in IT, including Microsoft Office and/or design software
  • Ability to edit and present information clearly and professionally
  • Basic understanding of social media, marketing, or communications processes
